New Year's Eve is an awful, awful holiday →
(via theatlantic)
Hampton Stevens so perfectly describes why I’ve never loved New Year’s Eve. I’m trying not to be grouchy about it, so I’m still going to roll my eyes, put on eye makeup, and go drink. But only with my favorite cynical friend and only at my favorite dive bar.

Resolute
res·o·lute /ˈrezəˌlo͞ot/
Adjective: Admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering.
I used to think resolutions were sort of a joke, until I made a joke of them. Last year, I resolved to “become a magician.” Which, in Chelsea-speak, means that I learned to yo-yo, tried juggling, and learned a card trick. Someday, internet, I will show you my card trick.

UGHGG ARGGHGH
Got home last night from a day of traveling to a house filled with paint fumes. For some unknown reason, my landlord decided to paint only the bathroom connected to my bedroom while we were all away. I have a headache from sleeping in the fumes. Also, the entire bathroom is covered in a film of paint dust and I have to clean it before I can shower. That is just too much right now.
My upstairs...
Charlie Rose and Jay-Z at the Brooklyn Museum →
Charlie Rose is one of the best interviewers, and his questions for Jay-Z held my attention for the entire hour. They talk about music, drugs, his new book, and his place in the history of rap. Jay-Z is an interesting dude who’s done a lot of thinking about how he got where he is. He also schools Charlie on how to say “Tupac” without sounding like a white guy.

Be Kind
We watched Home Alone on VHS this afternoon. When we turned it on it was just snow on the TV. It took everyone in the house a beat to remember that you have to rewind VHS tapes. I can’t believe I forgot about rewinding. Man, living in the future is great. No more rewinding ever.

Folks I’m $500 away from my Kickstarter goal to make an EP. Help me out, I’m so tired of seeing my own face on everything! Check out the Bedroom Sessions video Julie Peel made featuring me, Julie, Maryanna Sokol, and Jax de Leon singing my song “All Good Cowboys” and Rilo Kiley’s “With Arms Outstretched” (above).
Wanna help a kickass musician and awesome person do something...
Winter Break
I’m off to Mexico for a week, and then back home to Portland for a week. I can’t wait to get some good relaxing in, and then spend some time in the good ol’ Northwest. Things will be quiet around here, at least while I’m out of the country. See y’all on the flipside.
Here’s my Pummelvision for the Owsome blog. It’s a strange and fun look back at the last few years of my life through Tumblr’s eyes.
I never lose sight of the fact that just being is fun.
– Katherine Hepburn (via mercybell)
I never knew I subscribed to the Katherine Hepburn school of thought. I always know it’s been a good day when I have a moment that reminds me of exactly this.

Basically, this is James Franco making out with... →
I’d say that pretty much sums up this year in entertainment. However you feel about Franco, good or bad, I think it’s time we all took a little break. Please.

On basketball
Growing up, we watched a lot of basketball. Toph played in a league when we were young and I would sometimes shoot hoops with him in the driveway. He and I used to collect basketball cards and spend hours poring over them. We rooted for the Blazers, of course.
Dad even knew some of the players through the BMW dealership where he worked, and we got to meet some of them. Having a pro basketball...

Locating over your head →
bobulate:
Alexander Isley on going to work for Tibor Kalman:
It’s really important to be in over your head, to put yourself in a position where you’re in over your head — whether you’re a designer or just a human being. To be challenged. Because you know what? After a couple of weeks of being completely terrified, you’re on top of it, and you can do it. (8:00)

After 26 years writing Harper’s Notebook, Lewis Lapham is packing up his pencil. CHRISTOPHER R. GRAHAM talks with him about history, essays, and flocks of modern journalists.
