Happy Days
I got new coral flats today, the loveliness of new shoes made better because I bought them with a gift card, so I’m not even one cent poorer. Now, I’m sitting at a symposium on The Moon. Good day, indeed.

Mission to Mercury →
I also wrote a piece about the European Space Agency’s upcoming mission to make better maps of Mercury (say that five times fast). The cool thing was talking to the guys who designed the spacecraft because they did some really genius stuff to deal with the heat that close to the sun.
I didn’t put it in the piece, but I asked one guy what happens to the ship once they’re done...
A manifesto for the simple scribe – my 25... →

I gave it the not-very-serious subtitle of “manifesto for the simple scribe” and at around the same time, I realised that when stories that I had tried to write turned out wrong, it was because I’d broken one of my own rules. So I decided I might have written something quite useful, after all.

Some days
Between the white sky and the frozen lake and the puffs of breath vaporizing on the cold air, Chicago really seems like Narnia.
In a great way.

S. Carey | In The Dirt
Caught wind of this via musicforant’s twitter account. For anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of experiencing S. Carey’s All We Grow I fully believe you’re depriving yourself. The video is a perfect complement to the song that captures how well Carey can find beauty in sparseness.
All We Grow was one of the first album reviews I did for 1000x/minute and it still...

You get up early in the morning and you work all day. That’s the only secret.

This is good to remember. It’s that simple.

So, I’ve had this brewing for a couple weeks now, and I’ve been so excited but not really sure it would work out, so I kept my mouth shut (online anyway). But it’s official now, so I can finally tell you guys.
I am going to CERN! In Switzerland!! To hang out at the Large Hadron Collider!!! In three weeks!!!!

Too true for science fiction →
So my writing for Medill is gonna be public from now on, and here’s my first story. This scientist created an acoustic invisibility cloak that can hide objects from sonar. And he says it’s possible to develop it into fabric and even paint. SO COOL.

Charlotte's Web
nprfreshair:
The spider, dropping down from twig, Unwinds a thread of his devising; A thin, premeditated rig To use in rising. And all the journey down through space, In cool descent, and loyal-hearted, He builds a ladder to the place From which he started. Thus I, gone forth, as spiders do, In spider’s web a truth discerning, Attach one silken strand to you For my returning.

And now that I'm thinking of my brother...
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt like an individual, the way a non-twin does,” he says. “I literally feel like a bookend, as if there were a set of books next to me and at the other end of those books, there was another bookend. I have a sense of being part of a pair of things. Even in relation to Wally, my brother, I feel like he’s an individual and that...
