Stories I loved writing
I thought I’d do my own little year-end recap. Here are my favorites from the pieces I worked on this year.  Using EEGs to find consciousness in people with ‘locked-in’ syndrome A Q&A on the crazy underworld of the exotic pet trade, inspired by the story of the man who released 56 wild animals in Ohio and then killed himself A look at Derek Boogaard’s death and the...

The sounds of Christmastime
Everything I can hear right now:  The rain hitting the windows My kitten purring next to me The whirr of my laptop fan Clinking plates Muffled Christmas music My happy heartbeat

On home soil
As we flew down into San Francisco this evening, we were treated to an incredible sunset that looked like it lit up the entire Pacific Ocean. I don’t remember the last time I laid eyes on the Pacific and it took my breath away. By the time we’d touched down, every water droplet in the fog around us was reflecting the last of the sun, making everything look like it was draped in the...

This blog has 100,000 followers and I can't quite...
Well, this is quite the Christmas present. I’m blown away by the response I’ve gotten to my little corner of the internet this year. This was the year I took a chance on myself, risked a lot, learned a lot, and had a complete blast. And having so many of you along for the ride has been such fun. But instead of focusing on me, I thought I’d tell all 100,000 of you about some of my...

Feelin' funky
I’ve had a weird week. Been a bit down and a bit up and a bit all around. Transition is hard for me, so I’m trying to keep busy and not look directly at the complete abyss of UNKNOWN that’s coming at me. Stuff I’ve done to take my mind off of everything this week:  Went out to visit Clare’s family with the girls. We ate in what’s supposedly the oldest pub in...

Brian Williams Prepares to Interview Marcel the... →
OH MY GOD. I have never been this jealous. The only thing I want to do as a journalist other than going to SPACE is interview Marcel the Shell. And it’s Brian Williams? It’s like every wonderful thing is coming together.

Been getting lots of questions about the tooth...
So here are some answers out of context: They gave me the tooth to take home because I asked for it. Once we were finished, the doctor said, “Do you want to see it?” And I said, “See it? I want to keep it!” He laughed, but they disinfected it and sent me home with it. Simple as that. My face isn’t swelling, and the bleeding has pretty much stopped, but the scariest part about the aftermath is...

Current state of mind: terrified
I’m at the dentist waiting to have an appointment where someone will take a pair of pliers to my mouth and pull out a tooth. And this damn waiting room has that sad hymn from Titanic playing. You know, the foreboding one that says something about peril on the sea? Yeah, that one.
