West Coast Units Of Measure

A while ago, Charlie and I were having a conversation about how she and Toph tried to make home-made tater-tots at home in this little fryer they had been given. She was describing it and she said, “It’s about 3 tots big.” We started laughing about how that could be a unit of measure for Portland (because, if you didn’t know, everyone here is obsessed with tater tots. It’s like the whole city is collectively saying, “French fries can blow me. Tots are where it’s at.”).

Anyway, this conversation spurred the idea of West Coast Units Of Measure, the beginnings of which I present here:

  • Volume: How many tots to fill it up. Example: That bowl is about a 6-tot-er.
  • Distance: How many pedals of a fixed-gear bike. Example: How far away are the food trucks? About 48 fixed-gear pedals.
  • Time: How long it takes to drink a can of PBR. Example: Yeah, we’ll meet you at the farmer’s market in about 4 PBRs.
  • Crowd size: Number of flannel shirts. Example: The Oregonian said there were about 3000 flannel shirts at the Christmas tree lighting.

I’d love to hear any others, if you’ve got them.
