Astronaut Frank Culbertson, the only American in space on 9/11, in a letter about his experience that day. I always get emotional about September 11th, but it’s been many years since I’ve been as choked up as I was when I read this letter. 

He heard the news early in the morning and passed over Manhattan as the second tower fell. He took a picture of it. I can only imagine what a lonely and scary time it must have been up there. 

He says: “Other than the emotional impact of our country being attacked and thousands of our citizens and maybe some friends being killed, the most overwhelming feeling being where I am is one of isolation.”
