The hashmark was was born in the 70s at Bell Labs and was first known as the ‘octothorpe’. This little article on its genesis is mildly interesting, though I would have preferred to learn more. Who designed the hashtag? Was it based on other existing symbols? This piece didn’t get into too much depth on the matter, but what really caught my attention was a passing mention of a crazy-sounding game:
"octopush (an underwater game played by two teams of scuba divers pushing a lead puck on the bottom of a swimming pool) originally had eight players a side"
Why isn’t this an Olympic sport??
